The Unwritten Rules of Your First Job
Nobody hands you the real handbook on day one. Here is what usually goes unsaid about how work actually gets done.

Every workplace runs on two sets of rules. The written ones are in your onboarding pack. The unwritten ones decide who gets heard, whose projects move, and how quickly you stop feeling like a visitor.
What to watch for in your first month
- Who people check with before making a decision — that is where influence actually sits.
- How disagreement is handled in meetings, and whether it happens in the room or afterwards.
- What "urgent" means here in practice, as opposed to what it means on paper.
- Which channels matter: the standup, the group chat, or the quiet one-to-one.
You do not have to work all of this out alone. Naming what you are noticing, out loud, with someone who has seen a few organisations, turns a confusing first few months into a much shorter learning curve.
